About

The Santa Fe Trail Association (SFTA) is a non-profit created in 1986, dedicated to protect, preserve, promote and educate the public about the historic Santa Fe Trail, and works in partnership with the National Park Service to administer the Santa Fe National Historic Trail, created by Congress in 1987.  Twelve chapters cover the length of the Trail and focus on local history, programs and projects.  Our programs promote mapping, marking, research, and education.  We work closely with private land-owners along the Santa Fe Trail to help allow some access to sites on private property.  In 1821, Wm Becknell received credit for completing the first successful trading trip to Santa Fe, thus earning him the title of "Father of the Santa Fe Trail."  Plans of the Association includie commemorating the 200th anniversary in 2021.  Our membership is composed of people of all ages and walks of life, who share a similar passion for the Santa Fe Trail.  The Santa Fe Trail Association has created the Santa Fe National Historic Trail GeoTour which includes 73 geocaches in a five-state area.  The GeoTour is hosted on geocaching.com
